Maximizing simplicity: The art of bold minimalism

June 13, 2024

Words by Vev

Bold minimalism is all about embracing simplicity whilst pushing the boundaries of typography, colors, and compositions.

When you think of minimalism, you probably think of cleans lines, simplified forms, and a monochromatic color scheme. We love a minimalist web design, but have you considered trying out bold minimalism?

In this article, we'll answer "what is bold minimalism?" and provide examples to inspire your own digital content.

What is bold minimalism?

Whilst the two words "bold" and "minimalism" may appear to be a juxtaposition, they are in fact complimentary when put together. Bold minimalism is a style that, as with minimalism, comprises of clean lines and simple forms, but with high contrast colors, larger than life typography, and an abundance of negative space.

Maximalism vs bold minimalism

Minimalist design lives and dies by the motto "less is more", and prides itself on having no unnecessary "fluff". Whilst bold minimalism takes this a notch further with some bolder, contrasting color and typographic choices, maximalism lives at the opposite end of the spectrum.

Maximalist design screams “the more the merrier” through bold color palettes, out there forms and patterns, and a tiny amount of white space (if any at all). Often every bit of space is filled with a variety of design elements, many of which offer little to no function.

5 eye-catching examples of Bold Minimalism in digital design

Check out these bold minimalist web designs to get some inspiration!

Slosh Seltzer

Kicking off our list is this website for Slosh Seltzer. There is a lot of negative space, a hallmark of minimalist design, but the high contrast color palette and large typography makes this a prime example of bold minimalism.

Moreover, the web design makes use of hover animation, morphing the typography into liquid-like forms as you scroll.

North Face

North Face utilise bold minimalism as part of their Global Climbing Day campaign "Walls are meant for climbing". This visual sits on their website, and is comprised of a tiled composition of text and photo. We love the contrasting colors of the text background matched with the simplicity of the layout and clean lines.

Bauhaus-Archiv

Museum für Gestaltung's website for their Bauhaus-Archiv research project makes use of minimalist design principles of clean lines and monochromatic color scheme, with the additon of some brightly colored cards floating in the background. These cards move to the foreground on hover, adding an engaging element to the page.

On the 'Stories' section of the website, bold black typography animates on scroll, and contrasts with accents of bright red.
